Hi, I'm Alex. I run a small business, and my income is different every month.

For years I tried to keep a budget and kept quitting. Some apps wanted my bank login before I'd logged a single coffee. Others wanted me to learn a system first. A few just cost more per year than I wanted to spend on knowing where my money went.

So I sat down with my iPhone and went through ten popular budget apps the way a new user would – screenshots of every screen, counting the steps to the first expense, checking what's actually free after the trial. That's the review on the home page. I update it when prices or free plans change.

I'm also building the app I wanted and couldn't find: simple, free for the basics, no bank connection, and honest about what's paid. Here's what it will do.

How I review apps

• I install and use every app myself, on my own phone, as a new user.
• I don't link a bank, so you see what each app is like if you don't want to either.
• Prices and free-plan details are checked on the App Store and in the app, with the date shown.
• No app pays to be included or ranked. There are no affiliate links on this site.
• My own app is clearly marked and isn't ranked against the others.
